Deutsche Welle Launches Collaboration with European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC) and International Press Institute (IPI)

The German state public broadcaster will be working with the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC) as part of the NewsSpectrum Fellowship Program.

In the process, DW will bring together a group of journalists with selected fellows and support them in producing their content in Romani, the language of the Roma.

“The cooperation enables us to have a direct exchange between media professionals from the Sinti and Roma community and DW colleagues from Central and Southeastern Europe. This is not only a great experience for the participants, but especially for all users of our journalistic services,” says Adelheid Feilcke, Director of Programs for Europe. “We hope to get exciting stories and exclusive insights into different realities of life of minorities and majorities in Europe, which we will publish in many DW languages.”

NewsSpectrum awards grants to journalists and other media professionals who report in a minority language. Romani-speaking media professionals are invited to apply for the fellowships by May 28. Two types of fellowships are offered: Collaborative Reporting Fellowships support projects by journalists working at minority-language media outlets in collaboration with a majority-language media professional or media outlet. Professional Placement Fellowships provide customized short-term internships or study visits for minority language media professionals at majority language media outlets. It is recommended to seek a partner or partner organization before applying.

DW focuses on the life of Europe’s largest minority with the Sinti and Roma in Europe thematic page with regular dossiers, videos, reports and guest contributions from DW’s target areas. In the process, Sinti and Roma have their say in various life contexts.

NewsSpectrum is an initiative of the International Press Institute (IPI) and the European Association of Daily Newspapers in Minority and Regional Languages (MIDAS). It is co-funded as a pilot project by the European Commission (DG Connect). ERIAC joins the program as a partner.
