Local census outreach in Roma communities continues across Bulgaria

As part of the Proud Roma Free Europe campaign, Bulgarian partner Roma Standing Conference has been engaging in local outreach efforts to encourage Roma to participate in the national census.

Around 50 activists are travelling across Bulgaria to strategic locations where they can engage Roma communities on the ground. Delivering flyers and posters carrying messages on the importance of participation in the census and the processes involved, activists have so far travelled to the towns and villages of Bracigovo and Parvomay in the south, Sandanski in the south-west, Dupnitsa, Kyustendil, Scravena and Botevgrad in the west of the country, Medkovets and Vratsa in north-west Bulgaria and Sliven in east-central Bulgaria, where larger Roma communities reside.

The census takes place once every decade and has now been extended to 10 October. Roma Standing Conference, together with Proud Roma Free Europe, call on all Bulgarian Roma to declare their Roma identity proudly and freely.
